Agreed but the car didn't have to win everything or be the best all the time to be the favourite.

True, but I always revere the XD above all: Dad bought a blue one a week after Bathurst 1980 (where this then-eight year old Ford boy gained a new hero), and it was the car to finally break the drought which followed Moffat's waning, in addition to building the Johnson legend. The green XE was certainly a tough car, but provided me with three successive Bathurst disappointments.

I was glad to see the Palmer-tuff back at the museum today and was glad that the body had not been redone. It would noy have been the same if it was rebuilt. Give me dents and chips and character any day.
I hope they leave TRU-BLU natural aswell

Looking at the jobs that the Bowdens have done on some of the other cars, I can't wait to see TRU-BLU when it's done.

Yes, yes it is. The car was sold to Alf Grant in 1982, and did three Bathursts in Alf's hands (it gave Craig Harris his first start on the hill too), and gathered another two top ten finishes there.

Dick bought the car in the late 80's, and it was given a VERY hasty respray into something approximating the original signage (although the colour and the fonts - and some of the sponsor names - were all wrong).

You could still see some of Alf's paint in the roof, where the crows feet were breaking the paint up. She was a damn sight less pristine than the XE, but complete.

BTW, Alf was a partner in some real estate with Dick, in the day, and Dick did the driveline for the car under Alf's stewardship... and Roy McDonald spannered the car in 1983 at Bathurst for Alf.

It will undoubtedly be a wonderful sight to behold when it comes back from the shop. One of the guys I work with was a panelbeater in a previous life, and we got to talking about some of the folks the Bowdens use in restoring their cherished babies... we're talking creme de la creme here...

The Bowden family are going to return Tru-Blu to it's correct 1981 Bathurst livery and the car will get a full resto as it is a bit tired and needs it. They have taken their time to decide whether to do it or not and in the end the "Peoples Car" deserves to be back in concourse condition.

Dick has spoken of this car fondly and he always said that the XD was a better handling car than the XE's. They always struggled with getting the best out of the watts linkage, but the leaf sprung cars were old school technology that they had well and truly sorted.

Cheers

Yeah; the Australian Motor Racing Yearbook's article on the Greens-Tuf car quoted Dick as saying that the XE would only reward extra application from the driver: if you drove it at the same level of commitment as the XD, it was only that quick... apparently if you picked 'em both up in one hand, and drove harder with the other, the XE would pull the times down...

I laughed to read Fred Gibson's comments in AMC (he had built Falsons for Joe Moore) when he said the XE was a misrable car - even Dick's, successful as it was.

The rear-steer effect from the Watts Link was pretty diabolical on debut - Bathurst 1982 was an unhappy event for all the XE's.

Great news; I'll be really keen to see her in her glory

Very glad to hear it is indeed the real deal. Can't wait to see it returned into its former livery (and glory).
Keep us intouch John with its progress - she is in great hands.
