Richo fires up over qualifying
The short nature of the Symmons Plains track became all too apparent following today’s qualifying session when an altercation between Steve Richards and Rick Kelly got physical.
It began on track when Kelly allegedly brake tested Richards when he thought the Ford Performance Racing driver had held him up.
Once they were out of the cars the drivers met up in pitlane between their garages and Richards grabbed Kelly’s shirt after Kelly allegedly threatened him.
“I walked down to see him because when he thought that I upset his run or whatever he came across in front of me and jumped on the brakes and I drove into the back of him and smashed the back of my car so I wasn’t really that pleased,” Richo explained.
“I was a bit confused as to why he would have done it when in my mind there was absolutely no drama.
“Rick was just upset about being held up which I didn’t held him up and he threatened to have me off at the next three races so I wasn’t too happy about that.
“He basically said for the next three races make sure you keep an eye out for me because I’m going to send you into the paddocks.”
When asked if there was then any physical contact involved Richards replied: “Yeah, I just neatened up his collar a bit."
Richards said he has never experienced anything like it before in his V8 Supercar career.
“It’s never really happened to me before… at some point in the session we all have times when we are close to cars on our laps and you do the best you can to absolutely not hold anyone up because it’s going to happen to you if you do,” he said.
Richards did not believe a format change was needed at the short circuit, where laps are under a minute.
“It was the same at the Gold Coast so I don’t see what the issue is,” he said.
“I’ve been held up before and as I said if Rick thinks that I did hold him up I apologise, it wasn’t intentional and when I looked in the mirror he was still four or five car lengths away.
“I was running within four or five car lengths away from cars and didn’t have a problem.”
Kelly was in a briefing and not available for comment.
