well, it would be in the correct #17 livery if they took the white stripe off the bottom of the windsreen sunstopper... it would be in the CAR's correct livery if they renumbered it #18...
100% correct Henry! I meant the livery as seperate to the white strip as I mentioned it earlier and did not feel the need to repeat [crackup].

In all seriousness though, the knowledge on the Mustang between yourself and Beejay is awesome! Love it!!!

Not sure if this has been previously discussed but why does the Mustang owned by the Bowdens look like a bitsa compared to this one - theres plenty of non authentic parts on it, if my (old) memory serves me correctly.

I made a passing reference to that a little earlier: it was campaigned as a sports sedan by Ian Love in WA for quite some time, and was fitted with the older model (1983) bonnet and whatever else under his ownership (the dash was replaced as well), and played with a bit, hence the white paint inside etc.

When Dick bought it back, they (DJR) basically threw a coat of green paint back over it and left it at that: they had all intentions of restoring it properly, but it hadn't been a priority, and was sold in the condition in which it remains. I believe that the Bowdens also had similar intent of restoring it properly (IIRC, Dan or Chris had all intention of giving Dick the opportunity to give it a gallop among the Group C/A historic set), but I'd say that things have gone a little quiet on that for the time being.

Thanks Henry, be great to see the Bowdens restore the old girl and get DJ behind the wheel at Surfers perhaps - JR and DJ in their respective 1985 mounts, time for a bit of blue oval revenge.

one of my first Bathurst memories was seeing Dick and Jimmy going side by side up Mountain Straight at Bathurst in 1985, Dick in the Mustang and Gentleman Jim in the pristine 635, and Jimmy having the ordasity to give the viewers watching via race cam from the Greens-Tuf Mustang the thumbs up.

Have a look - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1BGA8lGTFA&feature=related

At this stage the boys have just simply looked at getting the car going again so that it can be used at events. As Henry and others have mentioned, the car is a hodge podge of bits bolted together. The long term plan is to get it back to a more authentic state, but that will probably not happen for a few years yet. Lots of other cars need attention before this one gets touched. It is fairly good nick anyway, so I guess it can be used as is for the time being.

Bit of info for ya

This was posted on the Biante forum by Chris Bowden:

We own the second car, which debuted at the Sandown Enduro in 1985 and was #17 until the Sierra came along in 1987. The car for sale at Shannons is DJR1, which has some Zakspeed Gp A European history too. It should have #18 on it, in its current livery though. This car was also the Black and Gold JPS car from the Wellington 500 in 1986 IIRC. JPS is a very cool livery. Given that the current owner is quite adept at restoring a good car, I think the estimates are spot on?

From the horses mouth Maq. Chris and I both agree that the car would look cool in the JPS livery, but it is a DJR car so it is hard to justify it being anything but green.

Off topic, but maybe of interest to all you Group C diehards, the Bond #2 XC Coupe is ready to hit the track. We are going to give it a run at Qld Raceway this Sunday 27th June at the Shannons Muslce Car shootout. This is the first time that this car has been on a race track since late in 1978!

Dan is doing a bit more digging at the moment, but history is showing that the Bond car was parked at the end of 1978 in Moffats workshop when Ford pulled out of racing. It was painted in the Cobra livery by then. Moffat sold this car complete at the end of 1979 as a complete race car in #1 Moffat livery and the running gear was put into an XD shell.

The car is getting a shake down to see if there is any issues after a fairly intense mechanical rebuild. We hope to have it fully sorted for the Gold Coast event later this year. The car still doesn't have the correct BBS rims as yet, but they will be on it by the time it hits the streets of Surfers. It now has the correct bonnet on it as well. Getting there slowly. This is one cool car and has alot of history as a factory ford lightweight shell to boot.

If you are bored this weekend, get your backside trackside!

Cheers

What are the plans for the engine of the Bond car? I remember Peter Molloy was pretty frustrated with the rules where he couldn't use roller rockers and dry-sump.

How did things go with the XC? It sounds like a good adventure, I Loved the XC`s.

Overall not too bad. It wouldn't rev out and had a miss that the mechanics couldn't fix at the track. The plan is to take it to Lakeside in August and give it a good run there before the Gold coast event.

Since the XC was playing up, we decided to bring the Longhurst B&H Sierra on Sunday. It was a scary ride on very old tyres when the boost came on! The car ran well though, so with some new boots this one will get a few more runs in the near future.

I would love to get the chance to be at Lakeside when you take the XC out again John.

Could you please keep me informed of when you will be there....PLEASE!

Lakeside is only 10 min away, where I need to allocate 3 hours drive time to go to QLD raceway & back.

Hey Ross

The plan is to take a few of the cars to Lakeside on the 7th & 8th of August. They are running an event with historic cars that weekend. This will most likely be our last chance to run a couple of the cars before the event at the Gold Coast in October. The plan is to take the Bond Coupe and maybe Tru Blu if the engine is back together in time.

Cheers
John
