Hey guys,

I am going to be resigning from my current job, how is the best way to do this?

I have applied for training in May's NSW Police's intake of approx 880 people. I have a high chance of being accepted but I haven't yet got that piece of paper to say CONGRATULATIONS. approx 1 week away.

My current employer is inconsistant and won't fix things around the office, yet buys a boat to take on holidays, which he leaves on Thursday. I have held off telling him where to stick it for 18 months now and I blew up stucking up for myself today at another worker and I feel I don't have to put up with it any longer. It feels like they have both ganged up on me.

Should I wait until the boss returns from holidays? or should I do it tomorrow?

Write a letter and hand it to him, state that the letter contains my resignation and finish date. No need to explain anything to him thus avoiding any further issues, unless of course he gets the shits that you're quitting. Wait until the boss returns or do it Thursday before Easter.

Do you have a contract with your current employer. This generally states what the requirements are re resigning. Otherwise, the general rule is that the notice required is the same as a pay period.

Llike Poita said, put it simply in writing, no need to go into details, and whilst it always feels good to go out swinging, hold your head high and leave with dignity. You never know when you might need a reference, or a job. And I would wait to get something official in writing, a crappy job is better than no job, although would make it easy to get to the team mates night!

Good luck with the new challenges, hope the transition goes well.

Hey Benny

One thing I have learned over the years.......no matter how bad the current situation is, never ever burn your bridges. I completely agree that the letter of resignation Poita and PB describes is the go.......and

As much as the situation sux, DON'T do anything until you have your intake letter. Government departments (yep I work for one too, and used to wear a uniform) are the best at f.....kin people around, particularly when they have prepared themselves by finalising their current arrangements. Get that letter in your hand from the cops, then put your resignation in.

Good luck mate.....things will fall into place for you shortly....of that I am sure!

Thanks guys,

PB... No I don't have a contract with my current employer. Pay periods are 2 weeks and I was thinking of giving 3 weeks.

The boss was away today and I left a message for him to see me about this issue I had with this worker. The boss is due in tomorrow.

Team Mates night well, I am torn at the moment weather to go or not, If I do hand in that letter tomorrow I can make it. If I wait for that letter from the cops, I won't make it.

Here is a Pic of what is growing on the wall... it has been on the wall for the last 4 weeks.

+1, Totally agree with the reccomendation to put your official resignation in writing, it's the only way, and also to keep it simple. . . . you don't have to explain, give an excuse or a reason at all.

Here's an example , . .NOT.

Dear wanker,
I quit, as a boss you completely suck, the office makes a construction site shitter look clean and your choice of repugnant imbeciels as co workers, I find loathsome. Shove it where the sun don't shine !

Kindest regards, Benny

UMMM, Do you really want to resign Benny??? It sounds like you love the place and the people in it......he knows all to well thats BS. So, maybe you remove "sadness" and "very much" Start from "I write to you"....and f...k "fond memories" off....we know that's crap too. The last sentence is professional and sincere which should be the only concession you give the bastards [crackup]

I am actually serious mate....I said don't burn your bridges, but you don't need to come away with your nose smellin like their asses either.

I hope you take this in the spirit its offered Ben....good luck....and don't worry about the team mates night....not worth risking it....hopefully you'll have that letter to settle your mind.

You can't make your resignation effective today and give three weeks notice at the same time.

Use the KISS theory,

To XXXX,

"I Benjamin Rice hereby tender my resignation from my role as XXXX with XXXX effective on the 16th of April 2010.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with your company and I wish you and your staff all the best for the future.

Regards
Ben"

Make sure you sign and date it as well.

Thanks Poita. That's perfect.

I have been stressing over this all night... how to word it etc.
I think I might sleep on it for the night.

Cheers

Having recieved somewhere in the region of 25 of these in the last 10 months, believe me just keep it simple. Say you're resigning, the date you're final working day and don't do anything to burn any bridges.

I have seen it all from the narky page long essays taking pot shots at various staff and management figures to the ones who have done runners and called from wherever they flew out to and just said "I've left and am not coming back".

All they have really done is ensured they will never ever get another look in and this is a place where its not unusual for people to do 6 month cycles between tourist locations and return employees make up a large amount of the workforce.

And unless you don't mind waiting without a paycheque until or IF the NSW police confirm there is a spot for you with your name on it, don't submit the letter just yet.

Good luck with it all.

I was in the same position nearly three years ago now. There were issues at work the manager was oblivious to which in anyones line of work would be frowned upon, and also dangerous. As I was the WHS rep I informed the manager what was going on, he held a staff meeting and put the issue out in the open and also mentioned who his source was [jk] and the culprits got off with a verbal warning. I was called a whistle blower and whatever else, I put up with it for about 12 months, needless to say I quite enjoyed handing in my resignation.

And, . . . . I know it sounds parranoid, . . . .but keep a couple of copies of it, . . you know how things can get twisted.

Having written a few of these myself, and worked in volatile working environments, my two bobs' is that the lads have it spot-on. I've always tried to leave on the best possible terms, as you never know when you might need a professional reference in the future... we've had a couple of guys go lately, and they've left on bad terms, and their manager here won't be going out of their way to say nive things about them into the future unfortunately. It's impossible to simply write-off your employment history where you are currently, so it's hardly worth sticking it up the boss on the way out... no matter how much he may deserve it, or how much short-term satisfaction one might think they'll get from it... I've moved into an industry that's light-years from the one in which I started... and surprise surprise, there's a heap of blokes within my current industry that I knew way back when... it's only a small world, so if you are fed right up with the mob you're with now, tak eyour satisfaction from having escaped with your sanity! :D

Good luck with it Ben.
As most of the others have said keep it simple, leave on good terms and don't burn your bridges and
Just leave knowing how satisfying it will be if in the future you are in the situation to give the perpetrators a ticket.

Thanks guys,

I held my head high as I walked into the office, I said 'hey (insert staff members name that I had this issue with)' He completely ignored me.
So The first opportunity that I had, I grabbed the boss, explained the issue and then I mentioned that I had applied for the force. I could tell that he was disappointed...

He basically expressed that he was disappointed in both of us and that it was all childish etc...

He said just wait till you have that letter and we'll go from there. (PHEW!)

He just came in, after everything as cooled down and asked when I expect to finish up I said the 16th, but might be able to wait till the 23rd, and he said, firstly wait for that letter and If you can wait till the 23rd, that would work best for him and then give him the resignation letter.

Thanks heaps for the insite, this is the first time I have resigned from a proper job...

DK ... that was quite funny, but its sad that its true
Nascar ... I have a few item I considered to sell, just incase I run out of funds... like my Managed fund I had put away to use as a house deposit.
TS-50 ... especially in this office, copies will be kept.
Henry ... I try to be as professional as I can be. I must of been insane to start here in the first place. of sanity reasons I spoke to the boss today
Bartman... Thanks Batman, that thought crossed my mind and it put a smile on my face.
