Which was the last Hardtop to compete in the ATCC??
Who drove it??
What year??
What was it's championship results??
Which team originally prepared the car??
Who drove it at Bathurst in 1978??
And what was special about this car??

The last hardtop that raced in the ATCC as far as I know was Bill O'Brien in the 1980 ATCC Col.

O'Brien finished 14th in the 1980 ATCC on 9 pts.

Am I on the right track Col??

Joe, "hardtop" was a term given to pillarless coupes of various makes. The XA-XC Tudors (another old Ford name for their two-door couples) were often referred to by aficionados (such as bigcol and myself) as "hardtops" due to their lack of a b-pillar. While it made for a gorgeous profile, the doors weighed a ton, and the hinges weren't as sturdy as they should've been. Still, an XA hardtop remains at or near the top of my wishlist.

TO the question... jeez, back to the bible! I seem to remember the car being red or orange with a white side stripe... I find it easy to believe that it was Bill O'Brien... Off the top of my head, I don't know where the car came from originally... will be interesting to see if it's written in anything I've got in the archives back at Swamp Manor.

O'Brien's XC was red with blue striping & was sponsered by long time sponsor Everlast Batteries. It did race in the final round of the 1980 ATCC at OP so I presume this in the last Hardtop to compete in the ATCC.

Yes it was the Everlast car. Llyod Bax currently owns and drive's it in the historic Group C races
Bill O'Brien did in fact drive this car in it's last ATCC championship race.
In 1980 it did finish 14th in the ATCC ... Any other years????

We still need the
Team that originally prepped the car
It's 78 Bathurst pilot's
And what was special about the car

OK, we are on the right track with the Everlast XC then.[8D]

Now this car was entered by Norm Smith Racing for the 78 Hardie Ferodo 1000 for Leo Leonard & Gary Sprague.

Also, apperently O'Briens XC was built with one of the lightweight Cobra body shells which must mean it was one of the last XC hardtop's built.

Also finished 16th in the 79 ATCC..:)

Thats the one Rob

Correct on all counts

This car has the Allan Moffat inspired rear wheel arches where they used the outer wheel arch in place of the inner and effectively made the wheel arch tubb around an inch and half wider. This was perfectly legal as all the rules stated was that it had to be an original pressing. As well as a heap of extra spot and seam welding.

Do you know if it was the last XC built Col?? Probably not but I'm sure it would have been one of the last. DJ's was built in 78 as well IIRC..

While were in this era & line of question.

Who was the last driver to score ATCC points in a Holden Torana & in what year???

Have to be Gricey in 1980 wouldn't it?

The Craven Mild A9X was a fantastic looking piece of kit that year... he crashed it heavily and re-shelled it... and then trashed it again...

You would think so wouldn't you but no, Gricey wasn't the last to score ATCC points in a Torrie..[:0][:0]

Think Queenslander & no it wasn't Wally Lewis..:D:D

Not Donnelly SF. He would have been piloting the "Rock XD" by then I presume.

This particular driver only competed at Qld racetracks & it was after 1980..

Rob as far as the last XC hardtop to be built. I'm not to sure of that one. Considering Edsell had a garage sale with the remainder of the hardtop shells when they put the Cobra's together.
Bit hard to know whether they did it before the road cars or after them.
I might have to make a few phone calls for that answer

I was always interested in knowing if the Cobra were actually the last of the hardtops... I know that they were conceived to get rid of the last of them, but did the yhave leftovers, or keep marketing the usual model range in addition to the stripey snakes?

As far as I know the "Cobra" cleaned out all but a handfull of hardtops and those become Fairmont GXL hardtops.

Cheers Col.

Also back to the Torana Q. (Should have made a seperate topic 4 this one sorry people[:I]) Wasn't Charlie O'Brien.

This particular Torana driver competed in quite a few events in 81 & also 2 or 3 meets as late as 1982. She'd have been a bit out of date by then but actually scored some half decent results..[:0]
