Winton Practice feels pressure from tyres.
And that is was.
As a Dunlop Sprint tyre round, todays practice had Teams using left over tyres from the Hamilton NZ Round to gain data on tyre performance around the Winton Motor Raceway track.
If you looked at the results from the four practice sessions with some many changes to the placegetters over the sessions, then it could suggest that this weekend could shape up to be one of the craziest weekends of the year.
Practice 1 had Team Endurance drivers included with the bottom half of the field for the first time this year and 26 out of the 28 cars were on track.
JBR’s James Moffat ended Practice 1 in P3 and then backed it up with in P6 in Practice 2.
Practice 3 had the full time Championship field out on track with Steven Johnson ending in P24 and the Moff in P28.
The final practice session can be about setting a ‘mark’ before qualifying the next day. What was interesting is that some teams took the final hit out to run several sets of tyres whether Hamilton or new green tyres.
Johnson took his first set of new sprint tyres early in this session and ended in P10 while Moffat ended the day P25.
“We did learn a lot about the sprint tyres today” said Johnson.
“In the final session we decided to run a green set early in the session which proved to be the right choice. Tomorrow will be the start of a very interesting weekend.”
Post practice The Moff was more circumspect.
“The best part of the day on results was Practice 1” said Moffat.
“While I would like to have been higher up the time sheet the weekend really starts tomorrow with qualifying.”
With practice over for this Round what will be interesting is to see how teams take on qualifying tomorrow on the sprint tyre.
Qualifying for tomorrows race is at 11.05am.
