I think it may have been '94 after the Bill O'Brien crash at Bathurst and DJ's head hit the wall.

Not exactly sure though.

Actually, I think you may find that the reason Dick wasn't more seriously injured is because he had one installed at that time. I remember vaguely the footage of the crash (straight after it happened) along with commentary drawing attention to the fact that he had one (but then again I'm an old senile bastard).

Mind you, this was the very early days of window nets in V8 touring cars (Pre-V8 Supercars), so couldn't tell you how many of the other cars had them.

I believe Dick brought the idea back with him from running the 'Redkote' car in NASCAR, but as usual it was a bunfight to have them allowed by the ARDC.

So is this how it goes? Dj goes overseas to nascar where netting is compulsory & brings the Idea back to Oz and introduces it at Amaroo Prk.Has that accident at Bathurst and is saved from More injury by having a net.Next year it is compulsory....?I Rekon the Amaroo Prk part is right and when they were talking to Dj about it he was near the rear of field or wasn`t having a good round or something[?]

Some privateers had used them sporadically many years prior... the 1981 Great Race book shows an Escort at Hell Corner with netting fitted...

your correct Henry, and from memory it was Johhny Faulkner.

Just resurecting this old thread, I think Brock was the first to use them here in the Bill Patterson L34, he definitely had one at Bathurst '76. I think he bought them back from Le Mans where he ran the BMW CSL.

& you wonder why they didn't take off way back the BJ.

I know when DJ re-introduced them in 94, it was only a few rounds later it was mandatory..
