82 was when Moff & Willmington collided for the 2nd time at AIR Doug, when again Moff was coming up to lap him. DJ took the win that day in the XD!!

Unfortunately as a southerner, I never had the chance to take in a race meet at Surfers. Remember watching plenty of great racing their on the box from that roll over in 81 with the failing brakes on the XD, to that epic battle between DJ, Moff, Harvey & McLeod in the wet in 84. Seemed to always produce great racing IIRC.

I made the trip twice to Lakeside in the mid 90's before it closed & what a race track that was. From the cars backed up to the fence on the race track & the patrons with their BBQ's, to the $5 grandstand where you couldn't see bugger all. Still couldn't believe as a southerner, how big Dick Johnson was at Lakeside. I reckon he had 1/2 the crowd just following #17. It was crazy!!!

Good memories..
Rob you would have noticed out grandstand at lakeside every year
It was a truck parked next to the toilets where you cross the main straight. We used to set up scaffolding on the back of a mates truck.
We could see the whole track except a bit of the Carousel.
I enjoyed the i think 81 ATCC race at Surfers.
Dick was showing Brocky how it was done, i was standing on QANTAS hill when Brocky turned his Bommadore around right in front of us.

We had some big days on the back of that.
Even had a punch up there once.
Sent Brocky off in style when he followed the place getters around. There was about 10 of us hanging of the scaffolding and the truck all flashing their arse at Brock

My first race was Series Production at surfers in 71.

Went there later that year and watched the wheel standers do the 1/4
Ran my 351 XD around there a couple of times and the took the GT there for a drag day.
The track was that slippery i had the thing sideways in 3rd gear crossing the line. A 400 metre skid

Bigcol!? Do you recall a Wilies jeep drag car? Or (I Think the name of a drag racer by the name of Mick Pocock) He was a ford man with some pretty wild antics and high horsepowerd machines?[?]

Mickey Pocock used to run a Starlight Blue Ph2.
Didn't Geoff England run a Ford powered Willy's drag car
Mick used to own the Esso garage next door to my Grandparents house at Wynnum west at that big roundabout.
My late Uncle and him used to be fairly good mates

Oky,Doky..Geoff England might have owned the Willy`s,I don`t know the name but Mick Pocock was always a regular at Surfers. He was a Winner, and only ever ran this Willys Jeep once.He had done an engine swap from his Ph2.You could hear this thing up behind Dunlop as the crowed rose with antisapation and all of a sudden LURCHED out from behind the Bridge and stoped about 10 feet short of the line, with one more Boot Full It`s jumped into the air again with the whole chasis Twisting as it jumped foward and sideways at the same time and pulled up on the line. The whole crowd went silent,Something I`ve never seen since. He never raced it again declaring the thing was a monster.

The PH2 saw quite a bit of work on the drag strip and for quite awhile was the fastest thing in it's class.

Mick Pocock should be in Australian Muscle Car magazine as he was certianly a bit of a legend around here for many years.
