I have now heard from two different places that the Sydney 500 is not going to be very spectator friendly as far as on track viewing is concerned.

One source was reading about it in Motorsport E-news stating that unless you are near the top of a grand stand you wont be seeing much. The second was from an afternoon radio sport show that had a guy on who spoke to Colin Bond. Bondy reckons that the only thing people trackside will be watching is one of the many big screens that are around the track, due to the fact that most places on the track, spectators will only be able to see about 200 meters of track in front of them.

Of course all of this still does not take anything away from the atmosphere of being there, but if I was forking out my hard earned for tickets to watch the cars on the track I might be a bit dissapointed.

Anyone heard similar? Your thoughts?

Not surprising really for a concrete-lined street circuit. I found the same thing at Adelaide GP in '92. If you are standing at track level, all you will see is the roofs of the cars flash past. The Melbourne GP in 2005 was OK if you managed to stand on some banking.

Any truth to the rumour going around that Whingecup will race the 888 Holden at Sydney

Their first Commodore won't be ready for the track in 2 weeks time. It is currently at the painters getting the inside and underneath painted in the grey/silver colour that they use. Then it will go back to 888 for a full fit out. It will be ready for their first test early next year.

cheers
John

I can confirm that it is very flat Damo but really no different to an Adelaide, Hamilton, Townsville or Surfers Paradise.
There are some good vantage points around the place if you are a reserved grandstand ticket holder, but if you hold a G/A like myself, your view of the track will be limited.
I reckon the best place to be will be at the sequence behind the train station (Turns 6-9) and somewhere near a giant screen.
All I can say is that there is a real buzz in Sydney atm, and this event is going to put Sydney back on the Motorsport map in Australia...AMEN!!![bw]

To be honest, a race at Homebush couldn't be further from my motorsport map. I lived in the area for a few years and having driven through there dozens of times, I cannot see how a track there is going to work; The pics at V8 central show a very narrow track, which doesn't instill any more confidence than having driven the roads did.

I am on holidays at the moment, currently staying at the Citigate Mt Panorama, and going to homebush for a race never even entered onto the radar and if I'd wanted I could have easily fit in a day or two trackside into the plans.

Instead I hope i might just be able to squeeze in a visit to the DJR museum on my way back up north, if they haven't closed for Xmas by then.

DK, the glass is half full for me mate.

The Sydney 500 is great for Sydney and great for Motorsport. The Eastern Creek round has always been a farce with no atmosphere and no public transport. Oran Park is now gone, which means NSW only really has Bathurst. They will get approx 140,000 there this weekend.

Not only is the Homebush circuit close to the city, there is free public transport (train and bus) running directly to the circuit all weekend and the atmosphere here already is a-la Clipsal!

I think this event is going to rival the best of them and this weekend is the first time the Olympic precinct has been properly utilised since September 2000.

Game on for me mate [dance]
