Johnson and Moffat both finish in Top Ten at Winton
Steven Johnson and James Moffat both finished in the Top Ten in 8th and 9th respectively in Race 12 at Winton today.
Johnson continued his good form qualifying 3rd in the morning session while Moffat would start the race from P17.
After another good start Johnson was pushed wide early before getting some space to settle into 5th. With a safety car on lap 3 Johnson was again in touch with the leaders on the restart and pushed out consistent lap times before coming in to pit on Lap 20.
Another slick pit stop from The Team had Johnson back out and chasing down the leader group. Taking several positions Johnson pegged each in front with strong car speed and played out an experienced strategy looking after tyres while maintaining position before coming in for the final pit on lap 45.
With rain threatening the back end of the race, Johnson maintained his position to finish 8th in front of Team mate James Moffat.
“The car was not quite as good as yesterday but we still had a strong finish for points” said Johnson.
“We made some minor changes to the set up to improve yesterday s car but it tipped the car over the edge so that there was an imbalance making it hard to get the car off the corner to pass.”
"Once we got into clean air the car was ok but we were battling to pass which meant we had to use up the tyres and wasn’t able to make up the ground.
It was a great weekend as it showed we had the race pace to be up the front. Well done to The Team”
Meanwhile “The Moff” got off the line well and managed to avoid a pile up on Lap 3 which saw the only safety car for the Race. On the restart Moffat settled into his race rhythm to jump to 14th before pitting on lap 21.
Re-joining the race, Moffat continued his turn of speed and moved forward coming in on lap 46 for a fresh set of tyres which would see him in the hunt at the back end of the race.
Moffat pushed through the field to sit behind team mate Johnson finishing with his second top ten finish in P9.
“Great strategy today from the team” said Moffat
“The race speed was consistent especially in the second part of the race. Another couple of laps and we could have been further up there, but this was a good day today.”
After this weekend Johnson moves up to 9th and Moffat 22nd in the Championship list.
