Sorry SF, it was the 22nd not the 12th, but a good try for a young fella!
I guess you could say that something good and something bad happened on that day.

James Croll of Anderson's University in Glasgow had papers published in British Journals and other scientific publications on hydrostatics, electricity, physics, mechanics, astronomy and other subjects. They were recognized as works of the highest standard.

After leaving school at 13 and working various jobs from carpenter to salesman, James Croll was employed as a cleaner at the University, much egg on many faces I beleive. It just goes to show that self education can be more important than any other form.
