First time I saw Dick race was at the old Surfers Paradise circuit.
Would have been in the 70's because DJ was in his yellow Torana.
Does anyone remember that it had miniature number plates with Dick and Jill on them?
Can't remember if Dicks plate was on the front or rear

First time I saw Dick at the track was by accident. I was about 10 and some guy just could not wait for the huge line up at the toilet and went behind[crackup]

At least he went behind, I saw Tommy Radonikus take a leak in a sink at a footy game because he could not hold it any longer.

Jill was on the front, I only know from seeing it in the Unforgiving Minute.

Dick is only a couple of years more mature than me and I grew up with Jill (Julie-Ann as she was then) 3 doors away.

I think it was Bathurst 1980...

My first Bathurst, and what a disappointment. Moff's XD was underprepared, Dick was second in Hardies Heroes. Every bastard fell over and Brock won.

I had no idea how cold inland NSW gets at night and I hardly slept. With out sunscreen, we fried during the day. Sat at the esses where KB's brakeless Camaro punted a Gemini into the (then) new sandtrap. When the flat-top truck came to retrieve the Gemini, the Ford fans in the crowd were baying for blood, as word got around that it had wiped out Dick. You should have seen the possum-in-the-headlights look on the face of the truck driver. Poor bastard!

Woops! Looks like I already told that story! Five years ago...

First time I every saw DJ race was at Oran Park in 1990 for the final round of the ATCC. It was a showdown between Dick, Jimmy Richards, Colin Bond and Brocky for the title. Unforunately in only it's 3rd race, the Nissan GTR absolutely blew everyone away that day. He drove away from the field right from the outset and opened up a lead of almost 20 seconds with the stop go nature of OP suiting the 4WD right down to the ground.

Dick qualified 3rd behind Jimmy and Brocky and slowly slipped back through the field due to poor performing tyres. He pitted for a new set of boots and rejoined to set the fastest lap. Ironically, had he stayed out and perservered he would have finished 3rd or 4th in the race due to retirements and accidents.

Still I will never forget that day spending hours outside the DJR shed/tent (as it was back then) waiting to catch a glimpse of Dick. I actually walked alongside him from the garage to Pit lane then bolted back to watch it all on the hill at Momo Recaro. Aaah those were the good old days...

Some great posts here. For myself it would have to be Bathurst '92 (10yrs old), Went to alot of Bathurst's before this but a bit too small to remember. Standing on a plastic bin too see the start of the race in the torrential rain, And beer cans bring hurled at Garry Wilkinson from Ch7 on the Podium.
I heard there was a near riot on the hill when they found out the Nissan GTR won and Dick did not.

I have never seen dick race, apart from on the TV. I was not taken to the any of the rounds in WA when I was growing up. However I have made up for that. I get to at least 1 round a year since 2000. I always make sure to be at the DJR tent and see Dick. I have always had good chats with him at the tracks on the occasions
