Steven Johnson has taken on a senior management position...

http://www.speedcafe.com/2012/05/10/...le-within-djr/

Steven Johnson has taken on a senior management position within the team his bares his father’s name – Dick Johnson Racing.

Johnson, now in his 13th full season as a V8 Supercars driver, has secured a permanent role on the team’s board of directors, helping with the day-to-day running of DJR, plus shaping the future of Australian motorsport’s longest-running V8 team.

Dick Johnson Racing has won seven Australian Touring Car/V8 Supercars Championships, plus three Bathurst 1000s, but at times, the price of success has come at a cost.

In recent years, DJR has endured a chequered past, with sponsorship woes crippling the team in 2005 and 2006, before the much publicised ownership bust-up between Dick Johnson and his former business partner Charlie Schwerkolt in 2010 dogging the team.

Resilience, however, is a trademark of the Johnson team, who have grown to a four-car outfit this year.

Currently 13th in the V8 Supercars Championship and the best of the four DJR Falcons, ‘Stevie J’ says that his move into a management role within his father’s famous team is a step towards securing his and DJR’s future.

“It’s something that I’ve been looking at for a while,” Johnson told Speedcafe.com.
“I’m enjoying it. It’s a natural progression from me in my life and where it’s going. I want to make sure that when I’m 67 like mum and dad, we’re in a position where we don’t have to worry and my wife and I can enjoy our life.”

While Johnson says he is committed to retaining his role as race driver in the immediate future, the dual role has its challenges.

With two qualifying sessions and two races, it was a very busy day at the Barbagallo Raceway in WA for Jim Beam Racing.

The first 15 minute qualifying session, for Race 8 of the International V8 Supercars Championship, saw the grid positions set for the first race of the day. Dean Fiore led the Jim Beam Racing pack out into the warm sunshine in 11th position, and Steve Johnson in 24th. The Team opted for the Dunlop hard tyres for the start of the race.

Fiore’s Jim Beam Devil’s Cut Falcon began to struggle with grip throughout the last half of the race, causing the West Australian to drop back several spots, but he persevered and came home with a straight car in 18th. Steve Johnson made a good charge through the field and made up 5 spots from his grid position.

With less than 2 hours to prepare the cars for the last race of the day, the two Jim Beam Falcon’s returned to their garages without damage in 18th (Fiore) and19th (Johnson).

Lining up on the grid under threatening skies for the final race, the Jim Beam Devil’s Cut Falcon was the furthest forward in 16th and the Jim Beam Honey car in 24th.

The rain held off as Fiore and Johnson made the gains in the first few laps, both moving up 3 spots.

The team quickly reacted to a Taz Douglas yellow flag on lap 15 and called the Team in for new soft tyres and fuel. The strategy worked well, with Johnson exiting pit lane in 10th and Fiore in 13th.

The remainder of the race was mainly processional, with the drivers focussing on tyre preservation. Fiore was unlucky to not record his best finish of the season, being passed during the final lap by Tander.

At the end of the 50 laps around the newly renovated Barbagallo Raceway, Jim Beam Racing finished; Johnson 10th (up a fantastic 14 places) and Fiore 15th (up 2 places).

The Team will remain in WA to prepare the cars before they head straight to Victoria for the Phillip Island 300, around the world renowned Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit from 18 - 20 May.

The 20 minute Qualifying session at Trading Post Perth Challenge at Barbagallo Raceway was dominated by the weather, with both the Dunlop wet tyre and the Sprint (soft) tyre coming into play.

Jim Beam Racing began the session on wet tyres, but as the track continued to dry out towards the end of the 20 minutes, Steve Johnson returned to the pits for the soft tyre option.

Within a few laps, the rain began to fall again but the Jim Beam Honey Falcon persevered with the slick tyre choice and in the dying seconds of Qualifying, as the rubber came up to temperature, Steve Johnson scored his quickest lap of the session.

Jim Beam Racing lined up on the grid for Race 7 of the 2012 International V8 Supercars Championship in 11th (Steve Johnson) and 19th (Dean Fiore.

A Lap 1 incident between the race leaders caused much shuffling amongst the pack, with Johnson loosing several spots but Fiore gaining.

With retirements for both their Dick Johnson Racing team mates, the two Jim Beam Falcon’s plowed on throughout the race, keeping out of trouble, but a lack of grip in Steve Johnson’s car caused him to loose several positions in the last few laps.

Local Perth driver, Dean Fiore, led the Jim Beam Racing crew home in 16th followed by Johnson in 19th.

Tomorrow is a new day, and will see the Team head out for two Qualifying sessions in morning, followed by Race 8 and Race 9 in the afternoon.

It gets a pretty good review, and is probably only a preemptive strike at claiming they have an econonmy version of the falcon for Government fleet buys so expect to see a heap of them on the road pretty cheap in a few years time, ecoboost 4 has the torque and the Kilowatts of the falcon 6 from not too long ago, the thing is the 6 can do half to a million k's with reasonable maintenance, not too sure about the longevity of a smaller donk once it getts a little tired I reckon the weight and size of a falcon might just pull it down fast.

Jim Beam Racing Wrap Up from the ITM400 in Hamilton

As Jim Beam Racing headed out onto the streets of Hamilton for the very last time, the Team had high hopes for the 20 minute Qualifying dash. Steve Johnson was 13th quickest and Dean Fiore was 22nd.

The hoards of fans who came out to celebrate the last race in at the Hamilton Street Circuit, were expecting a fast and furious start as the 28 V8 Supercars lined up on the grid. The field behaved themselves and cleared turns one and two. Fiore focussed and picked up 3 places.

As the field settled into a racing rhythm and as the first round of scheduled pit stops began at lap 7, the crew headed in for Dunlop Sprint (soft) tyres.

Coming out of the pit stop, Jim Beam Racing were running 19th (Johnson) and 22nd (Fiore).

The only safety car of the day was called on lap 18, to clear debris left by a Tander broken splitter. Fiore and the Jim Beam Devil’s Cut Falcon, used the opportunity to head into the pits for a fresh set of soft tyres.

The race restart saw Johnson in 15th and Fiore in 21st.

Fiore became the effective race leader as the second scheduled pit stops were completed. Being the last to stop, Fiore exited pit lane in 14th spot, due to the Team’s strategy of the earlier pit stop during the yellow flag on lap 19.

The Jim Beam Racing Falcon’s focused on moving their way through the field over the closing 15 laps. Curb hopping violations by Courtney and Bright provided the Team with two more spots.

Steve Johnson led the crew home in the bright New Zealand sunshine, finishing 15th.

On the 5th last lap, Fiore hit the concrete wall on the inside turn 8, bouncing him into the right wall, damaging his steering. Fiore kept pushing his Jim Beam Falcon to the limit, coming through the chicane on the last lap and taking too much of the curb which was enough for car in it’s fragile state. The front left hit the ground, popped the tyre, causing a mad scramble with metal rims scrapping to get the car across the line in four-car wide drag race. Fiore bought his battered Falcon home in 6 places higher than his grid position, in 16th.

The Team now head back to DJR Headquarters on the Gold Coast for another tight turn around, before the trucks set off on their long journey across the Nullarbor on Saturday, for the reinstated Barbagallo round in 11 days time.

Seton drove for FPR in 2003 and 2004 then joined forces with fellow Ford legend Dick Johnson, signing a two year deal in 2005. With much fanfare and publicity the super team of Seton and Johnson would attack the championship side by side, but the marriage would come to a premature end only 12 months in.
Seton describes that year as the worst of his career. Not only was he out of a drive, but it ended his full-time V8 Supercars career.
“To be totally honest I found it difficult because there was no honesty there,” said Seton.
“I found you were always being judged and always on the edge and there was very little truth on job security or about things that went on in the team.
“I would say out of all my career it would be the hardest year I ever had.
“I’m one of those people that is straight forward and honest and I expect others to be the same and I didn’t have that during that year.”

New Zealand turned on a perfect day for Round 3 of the International V8 Supercars Championship with blue skies and warm sun, as Jim Beam Racing started their ITM 400 campaign with four practice sessions taking place on the challenging street circuit.

As in previous rounds, the first two sessions were dedicated to Rookies and the Lower 50% of drivers in the Championship.

Dean Fiore, in car #12 for Jim Beam Racing, headed out onto the track for Practice Part 1 and 2, using old tyres, as is standard for Jim Beam Racing during practice.

Practice 1 went by without incident, with Fiore coming back to the garage with a straight car, 8th quickest.

Despite a disjointed Practice 2, with two Red Flags, Dean Fiore’s Devil’s Cut Falcon was strong again in this second session, ending in 6th.

As both of the Jim Beam Racing cars (and the rest of the field) rolled out for Practice 3, the Team chose again to run old hard tyres, saving the allocation of green softs and focussing on set-up.

In this afternoon’s final session, the Team opted to use part of their allocated Dunlop Sprint (soft) tyres to review the performance of the cars.

With both Jim Beam Racing cars coming home inside the top 20 on the soft tyres, with Fiore in 15th and Steve Johnson in the Jim Beam Honey Falcon in 19th, gave the Team confidence heading into the Qualifying session tomorrow morning.

The International V8 Supercars ITM 400 in Hamilton resumes at 1100 (local time) tomorrow with Qualifying, Top 10 Shoot Out and Race 5 of the Championship.
